A team of 5 of us stayed in São Sebastião do Uatumã for 3 days. During our time there, we painted a Training Center that will be used for missionaries in the different Amazon communities. We stayed at the mission house, where Dona Santana and Eliza took good care of us by cooking, cleaning, and keeping us company.
The first evening, Ariel and I were invited to attend a Women´s Bible Study. There were about 20 women there to hear Pastor Cida, a missionary visiting from Manaus. She spoke about the importance of women as mothers and wives. We enjoyed a time of singing, and then a `merenda´ (snack) and time to talk with the women.
By the end of day 2, we were all feeling physically exhausted from the painting. It was very hot and because the walls were concrete, they needed many coats of paints. Cesar and Arthur found a coconut tree, and we had fresh coconut water to energize us. Mark was our source of entertainment when we were feeling low. There was a rooster next to the area where we were painting. Mark and the rooster were talking to each other with his infamous rooster call!
In the evening we went to the CBM church. We walked there from the house (about 15 minutes away) and heard Pastor Daniel speak. The people were very friendly, and I really enjoyed the praise and worship. Afterwards, we went for some pizza and enjoyed a time of laughter with our new friends.
Before leaving on day 3, I talked with the couple that takes care of the greenhouse. The garden was beautiful, and you could see how much pride they took in doing their job. Along with the many vegetables in the greenhouse area, the yard had many delicious fruit trees like acerola and passion fruit. At noon, we headed back to the team. We took a small fishing boat to get to Urucurá. It was amazing to see God´s beauty up close and personal!
