A Tender Experience: God's Love in Action

Clinic days brought many opportunities for seeing God’s deep love for his children. At one of our stops, a young mother brought her only child, a 4-year-old son with cerebral palsy. He was small for his age and couldn't walk, so his mother cradled him in her arms. It was clear that she loved him deeply, and I learned later that she bathed him three times per day. Thick, black hair covered his narrow head, and his eyes were wide as everyone worked and spoke around him.

We weren’t sure if he would accept the bitter-tasting dewormer pill, so we crushed it into a liquid to be administered through a syringe. A clinic volunteer held him in her arms as I placed the syringe in the corner of his mouth. As he swallowed, I held my hand on the back of his head to help steady his movements. To our surprise, little by little, he sipped it all down. A week later, I can still remember exactly how his narrow head felt in the palm of my hand. His hair felt clean, thick, and soft. What an honor it was to care for him, even for just a moment. To touch his precious head and give him something that would help him stay healthy - what a tender experience.

"Even the hairs of your head are all counted. Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows." — Luke 12:7

This reminds me of God's love for us. God not only knows the number of hairs on our heads, but he also knows how it feels. For he created us, and when we come to him in prayer, we come as his children, his creation. He listens to our concerns and holds us steady in his loving arms. What an honor and a comfort to be his child and to love his children.
